My mum is the best, because "I said so". I wake up everyday because my mum exists. I go to school and I try my hardest to get 90s on essays, because of my mum. She is the most honest and constant presence in life, which is the basis for my own. She sings the songs I write, and though she doesn't always get the lyrics perfect it's enough to let me know. That she thinks about me and that she acknowledges my own achievements...(read more)

Luminato, the Toronto Festival of Arts & Creativity, has unveiled a broad plan to embrace families, schools and communities with arts-based programs leading up to the Festival, which runs June 6th-15th. Last year the festival included free public events, in-school and community-based workshops and a Youth Creation Series. Now in its second year, the program has grown to include artist residencies and collaborative community partnerships with the Toronto Public Library, the Ontario Science Centre, Harbourfront Centre, Regent Park School of Music, and other arts and community organizations.

One of the world's most innovative television pioneers, Moses Znaimer, has been selected as the recipient of the 2008 Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award recognizing an outstanding individual who has contributed to the growth and advancement of the Canadian music industry. Znaimer will be presented with the honour during the JUNO Gala Dinner & Awards on Saturday, April 5th, 2008 in Calgary, Alberta and further feted during a special segment in The 2008 JUNO Awards, Sunday, April 6 on CTV."It's very sporting of [the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences] to confer this honour upon me," says Mr. Znaimer.

Five biographical tales have been shortlisted for Canada's Charles Taylor Prize for literary non-fiction. Vying for the $25,000 honour are: Kevin Bazzana, David Gilmour, Lorna Goodison, Richard Gwyn, and Anna Porter. Each year, organizers of the Charles Taylor Prize recognize a Canadian writer who has written a book that "demonstrates a superb command of the English language, an elegance of style and a subtlety of thought and perception." The winner will be named in Toronto on March 3rd.

The McGuinty government is creating scholarships in memory of Oscar Peterson to help young people study music at York University. The government is providing an endowment of $1 million to create five annual $10,000 music scholarships for talented students from underprivileged backgrounds. There will also be a $4-million endowment for the Oscar Peterson Chair in Jazz Performance that will allow professors to conduct in-depth music studies. "...Oscar Peterson was passionate about educating and encouraging the next generation of musicians," said Mamdouh Shoukri, President and Vice-Chancellor of York University.

Jazz singer Nancy Wilson will perform at the free concert for the late Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson at Roy Thomson Hall this Saturday. She joins our own roving reporter and superstar soprano Measha Brueggergosman, performing at the free, 90-minute tribute entitled "Oscar Peterson - Simply the Best." Producer-Composer Quincy Jones and Canadian jazz clarinetist Phil Nimmons, Peterson's friend and longtime collaborator, will share their memories of the great Canadian jazz pianist who died at his home in Mississauga on December 23rd, at age 82. Members of the public will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 3pm on Saturday afternoon. The performance will begin at 4pm.

The country's most famous hockey dad leads a star-studded list of new recipients of the Order of Canada. Walter Gretzky is included on a long list of winners that includes basketball star Steve Nash, former Supreme Court justice Louise Arbour, and oilman Jack Irving. Among the next-highest rank of Officer of the Order are human-rights activist Alex Neve, Deborah Grey, speedskater Clara Hughes, as well as Bank of Canada governor David Dodge.

Canadian jazz giant Oscar Peterson has died at the age of 82. Peterson's 50-year career took him from the jazz clubs of Montreal in the 1950's to the bright lights of New York's Carnegie Hall and beyond. With eight Grammys, he was named a Companion of the Order of Canada and had a 50-cent stamp designed in his honour.

Singer Josh Groban has made recording history with a fourth week at No. 1 for his disc "Noel" on The Billboard 200. Moreover, Groban's "Noel" becomes the bestselling album of the calendar year, overtaking "High School Musical 2." "noel" is now approaching 2.8 million copies sold since its Oct. 2 release...it'll make for a "very" merry christmas for josh groban.

The Canadian film industry scored an impressive number of nominations yesterday when the names were unveiled for the 65th-annual Golden Globe Awards in Hollywood on january 13th. Topping the Canadian pack was Toronto director David Cronenberg, whose Russian-mafia thriller, Eastern Promises garnered three Golden Globe nods. Canadians Ellen Page and Ryan Gosling were also nominated for their performances in Jason Reitman's comedy 'Juno' and Craig Gillespie's 'Lars and the Real Girl'. The Ireland/Canada co-production 'The Tudors' also received two nominations.

A 24-metre-long barosaurus is the centrepiece of the Royal Ontario Museum's newly renovated dinosaur galleries, where the Age of Mammals will reopen to the public Saturday. Nicknamed "Gordo", he's a sauropod or "long-necked" dinosaur that had been forgotten in the ROM storage room. It's the largest dinosaur ever to go on display in Canada and the most complete barosaurus skeleton displayed anywhere in the world. When the barosaurus was alive, he was one of the largest land animals ever to walk the earth; only the blue whale today is equivalent in size.

The U.S. prosecutor who headed the fraud case against Conrad Black says he was proud to put the former media tycoon behind bars. Eric Sussman says he found Black to be a `fascinating and interesting individual.' Black was sentenced Monday to six and a half years in a U.S. jail for his role in a massive shareholder fraud. He maintains his innocence and has vowed to be vindicated on appeal.

The verdict is in -- a six-and-a-half year prison term and a 125-thousand dollar (U-S) fine for former media baron Conrad Black. At his sentencing hearing in Chicago, Black made a brief statement in which he apologized to shareholders of the now-defunct Hollinger newspaper empire. Black, who plans to appeal, was convicted of three counts of mail fraud and one count of obstruction of justice in July.

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty says Canada is `hindering' the global campaign to reduce greenhouse gas emissions when it should be leading the fight. McGuinty says it's a tiresome debate for the Conservative government to say Canada won't sign any deal to cut emissions unless other countries sign on. McGuinty says Canadians want their government to be a leader in curbing greenhouse gases, but complains the Tories are preventing progress. The Ontario premier sent a letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, timed to coincide with the UN climate change conference in Indonesia, calling on Canada to adopt `deep and absolute emission reductions.'

Lawyers are saying that government pot can't match the effectiveness of strains available on the street.Lawyer Alan Young says his clients should be able to pick their own growers rather than having to rely on the government's supply, which some users say makes them sick. However, government lawyer Christopher Leafloor says that argument doesn't stand up because Health Canada has new and improved strains of marijuana.
