Start Fresh

Have you ever wanted to start fresh when it comes to diet and exercise? Many Zoomers do, as they search for ways to add healthy years to their lives. But 70 per cent are overweight and 39% are inactive. Now a pair of for    mer Olympians, Dr. Doug and Diana Clement have written Start Fresh, a step-by step manual aimed at our generation. He specializes in sports medicine and she’s a chef. They’re both in their 70’s and take my word for it, they look amazing.

“We have to eat less, smaller portions, avoid processed junk foods, and its motherhood! I think what we feel is its a wakeup call - we wanna be around when we’re 90-95.”

The other piece is exercise, and the problem is that many Zoomers overdo it at first. Dr. Doug Clement says we should aim to burn 600 calories a day.

“Our basal activities even in sedentary work are about half of that. Then if you start parking a little further away, taking the stairs, avoiding the elevator - all things like gardening…other activities like cleaning the house, all these activities add up. I think people are assuming that you have to do something intense to be fit. The reality is that as we get older, less intensity over a longer period will work just as well.”
