Szabo Tastes the Danforth

"This year I will be heading up the Wine Garden for the Taste of the Danforth Festival. Throughout the 3 day festival, which last year saw over 1.2m visitors, The Wine Garden will be offering sampling opportunities of selected Greek and Ontario Wines. Wines will be organized into flights of 3 paired with small bites of food, as well as served individually. Importing Agency representatives will be on hand to pour their wines. Visiting Master of Wine Konstantinos Lazarakis and I will also be leading short, 20 minute seminars on Greek grapes over the three days, as well as one longer more in-depth tasting on the Saturday evening."

I was quite impressed by the freshness and range of interesting flavours of this 100% Xynomavro (ksee-NO-mavro) rose from northern Greece. It is full of fresh red fruit mixed with intriguing savoury elements like olive tapenade and tomato sauce. The palate is clean and vibrant, with lovely acid and a pleasant firmness that makes this infinitely food friendly. Lots of flavour and simple pleasure here for the money.

Very reliable and above average complexity rosé with inviting spicy, herbal, red fruit, strawberry aromas and flavours. Dry, flavourful, medium bodied and well made. Great length. Drink now.

A perennial favorite rosado that still delivers the fresh peppery, strawberry flavours of Garnacha on a clean, vibrant well balanced mouthful of wine. Nice price too. Drink now.

Stratus Rosé de saignée. Gamay, with small proportions of other red grapes. More like a pale red wine than frivolous rose, fermented fully dry and destined for the table. This wine has delicate but noticeable tannic structure, showing fine depth of fruit, rich raspberry character, peppery spice. Very succulent fruit character and great length. "thoughtful rosé".
Enjoy now.
