Hub 14, a tiny studio on Markham St., is hosting the new dance-based cabaret series Under a Paper Moon. Seasoned co-directors Cathy Gordon, Jeremy Mimnagh, Meagan O’Shea and Heidi Strauss have the smarts to be fresh and creative. There are tables and wine and beer – in other words, it’s fun with substance.
Andrea Spaziani’s J is a well-crated solo of metaphoric disillusion. Susie Burpee and Linnea Swan’s Road Trip is a very clever melding of movement, gesture and satire to explore feminine pursuits.
On the lighter side is clown Rebecca Hope Terry’s endearing Lady with Egg, while performance artists Fides Krucker and Nik Beeson enact both comic and poignant vignettes to classic pop songs.
Laura Taler’s imaginative trilogy of films that follow the highs and lows of a romantic relationship add their own special dimension.
The eclectic nature and high quality of this cabaret make it a winner.
Under a Paper Moon continues at Hub 14 until Feb. 13.
