Soulpepper – David French’s Jitters

Reviewed by Paula Citron

David French’s hilarious comedy Jitters was a giant hit in 1979. In 2010, it’s just as funny, and the play’s Soulpepper revival is inspired. Jitters is a genuine Canadian classic that deserves as many airings as it can get.

Director Ted Dykstra understands comedy, and his production emphasizes the humour by having his cast play things straight. These actors playing actors are speaking from the heart as if their lives depended on every word, and it is their angst that anchors the laughter.

French’s plot is about the premiere of a new Canadian play. It’s a vehicle for actor Jessica Logan, a huge star out of the country, who has returned to get back into theatre. The famous New York producer Bernie Feldman is coming to see the show which could mean a Broadway run. Hence the jitters of the title.

Don’t miss this great summer laugh fest starring a great cast of actors.

Jitters continues at the Young Centre until Jul. 31.
