Soprano Renée Fleming concert with the TSO was very well-conceived. There was a wonderful variety of music which allowed the singer’s warm and vibrant personality to shine through.

Of particular interest were the three selections from Fleming’s new Dark Hope CD. With microphone in hand, she performed three indie rock songs in her natural register, including Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, and given her low, throaty sound, Fleming could have been a very distinctive chanteuse/song stylist.

The best interpreted pieces on the generous program were Mahler’s Rückert Lieder where Fleming showed her ability to capture mood, and the two delightful arias from Leoncavallo’s La bohème. The three Christmas encores were inspired.

Fleming’s voice is not big, or thrilling, but she does have formidable technique, and the control of her instrument is masterful. Her artistry is what stands out. Fleming is never going to have vocal fireworks.

As for the TSO, Peter Oundjian showed a deft hand in conducting opera. His readings were clear and dramatic.
